Description
"Final Grade" is one of 73 images I created for the book "Nailing Together Bits of Chaos: Jerry-Rigging a Life", poems by Donna Brua. The book is available for sale at my web site http://bitsofchaos.com/books.html
In the poem "Lines Drawn" a teacher reflects and compares her decision on grades to the life and death line faced by her student lost in war. The Blackhawk shown is the yearbook for the school where Donna taught in the Vietnam years.

Lines Drawn
I can see you now, Bob Wilson,
striding into my classroom after school
to argue for an A on your semester grade.
I knew by your wry smile
I was to be showered by your charms.
Those blue eyes sparked,
your smile turned winsome
to cajole me,
then came the earnest, piercing eyes
appealing to my reason
and lastly doleful eyes
pleaded for compassion,
but I held my stand
behind my normal curve and said,
"I have to draw the line somewhere."
I think of you, Bob Wilson,
dead in your cockpit
sunk in that rice paddy
and wonder how eyeless sockets argue
with whoever drew that real line.
