The poem "Line and Shadow" equates the elusive nature of water with "a thousand furrowing pewter fish" and "water separating into shadow and light, falling over themselves, their white crinolines dropping over their darker undderside. In the drawing the little fish swim up and become the waves.
Line and Shadow
It's hard to nail down water.
It's like jagged slate, or ripples,
or a thousand furrowing pewter fish
as we fumble to catch
an image already gone.
We draw lines in pencil,
or our white paint ends, gray begins
in lines of difference,
of ridges of watsr separating
into shadow and light,
falling over themselves,
their white crinolines( dropping
over their darksr underside.
