Artist's Description
"It's in the Grain" is one of 73 images I created for the book "Nailing Together Bits of Chaos: Jerry-Rigging a Life", poems by Donna Brua. The book is available for sale at my web site http://bitsofchaos.com/books.html
This drawing was inspired by lines from the poem "Wood Not Seasoned Well"--Old men hunch on stoops...bowed along faults...gnarled fingers branch over craggy faces, rheumy eyes water, their tears stain their cheeks.
Wood Not Seasoned Well
Wood strains and cracks
along its length
seeking the way
wind bent it low
in winter storms.
Old men hunch on stoops
of houses with peeling paint,
bowed along faults
storm crazed in their spines,
gnarled fingers branch
over craggy faces,
rheumy eyes water,
their tears stain
their cheeks.
Once more we prime and paint
wood not seasoned well,
but amber sap still seeps through slits,
boards pull away remembering
how ice...
