Inspired by the last stanza of the poem "Demons of Naught"--"Through the window you see Miss Dickinson of Amherst...armed in her white dress, a sheaf of little poems ...dashing demons...to stop their writhing in her brain."



Demons of Naught

When was it
that flash of darkness struck
when you awoke
in a cold sweat, a hounded fox
running from ivory teeth
more piercing than the bark of fear?
you saw no plan, no planner
but you, caroming
from shrub to rock to hole,
haunted by ephemeral fiends,
and thought you were the only one?

The James family
of Boston, Cambridge, the world
lived with devils.
Henry Sr. left the house one day,
soon to return quaking to his bones.
His little Alice,...
