This is one of 73 images created for the book "Nailing Together Bits of Chaos: Jerry-Rigging a Life", poems by Donna Brua. The book is available for sale at http://bitsofchaos.com/books.html
Inspired by the last stanza of the poem "Demons of Naught"--"Through the window you see Miss Dickinson of Amherst...armed in her white dress, a sheaf of little poems ...dashing demons...to stop their writhing in her brain."
Demons of Naught
When was it
that flash of darkness struck
when you awoke
in a cold sweat, a hounded fox
running from ivory teeth
more piercing than the bark of fear?
you saw no plan, no planner
but you, caroming
from shrub to rock to hole,
haunted by ephemeral fiends,
and thought you were the only one?
The James family
of Boston, Cambridge, the world
lived with devils.
Henry Sr. left the house one day,
soon to return quaking to his bones.
His little Alice, possessed
by unseen goblins raging
through her limbs,
beckoned death to come for her,
Through the window, you see
Miss Dickinson of Amherst
shut in her house,
armed in her white dress,
a sheaf of little poems her shield,
dashing demons with slashes of ink,
lashing them to paper
to stop their writhing
in her brain.
